ATL on MTV : Sick-Nasty or Sell-Outy?

All Time Low's video for Six Feet Under The Stars was played on TRL as a part of the fan-submitted "Jukebox" feature. There's been some controversy over whether or not the band is starting to "sell out." What do you guys think?

See that's what I thought selling out was Alex... and if it is something else I must have missed it
But if that is what selling out is you guys are far from it ;)

Ur Gorgeous! ♥
but, I think to sell out, is to like..
hmmm I'm not sure... It means like...
**compromising of one's integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, 'success' or other personal gain. It is commonly associated with attempts to increase mass appeal or acceptability to mainstream society.**
So someone thinks ur trying to gain, by trying something new..
even if u hadnt tried personally...

Just because you were on MTV one time because of some fan made it happen, doesn't mean you're selling out. I never really liked MTV. I always thought that it tended to ruin a band's music. But Paramore is all over MTV now, and they're still the same band I know and love. Plus really, people like them and people like you guys are the ones that really deserve to be known........unlike a lot of artists and bands who are mainstream. I never want you guys to change, and I don't think you ever will. :)

you guys definitely haven't sold out, you doing the music you want to make, and it shows when you guys are on stage, i still respect you guys, and I'm not really sure why other people don't anymore
rawrxrainbowxsex: 12/10/2007 9:01 PM
It also means.
**Selling out is seen as gaining success at the cost of credibility. Every person, from the entertainment industry, to political revolutionaries, to a bohemian who suddenly switches to a socially conservative lifestyle, could be a sellout.**
But You guys are far from any of this!
So I'm sure u have nothing to worry about
and if anyone says different their just jelous!
because u guys are unique and have great music!

deff not selling out. selling out is like you guys getting uber big and not caring about the music you have created and the meaning behind the songs and what it means to you guys and ATL fans and not caring for all the fans thats been there for you guys ever since back in the day when you guys did blink covers. you guys are deff not selling out. be proud you guys are getting somewhere. many bands will kill to have as much success you guys are getting.

and like no matter what, your true fans would not give a flying fuck if you were featured on trl bc truthfully i honestly do not care just as long you guys stay true to the music you play/make and to yourself and obviously to your devoted fan base. bc the music is awesome. and so are you guys!

i honestly don't think that you guys have sold out... yet. and hopefully, you guys never will. was it your fault that you guys appeared on mtv? no. i understand where everyone is coming from though. you guys are getting bigger everyday, and it makes it that much harder to communicate with you guys. back when we would mention All Time Low, and everyone would ask "wtf, whos that?" back when we would message you guys, and you would reply back. back when, it would be so easy to catch up with you guys at shows. i miss that.

though, i do think it's lame how some bands try SO HARD to get on TRL. people say that they are in this business to make their fans happy and to make music. if thats the case, then why are they trying so hard to make it on TRL. i don't understand the big hype about TRL. that's why i have so much respect for bands like p!atd. they've never posted any of the bulletins requesting people to vote for them on TRL, but yet they've made it.

don't shoot me, now. but i really think that paramore have sold out. their crushcrushcrush video is made for MTV and i'm sure they knew that during the process. They've lost their creativity and originality that they had on all we know is falling.

please never become one of the bands who post bulletins asking people to have "VOTE ATL FOR TRL" as their default picture. weaksauce.

wooo! that was long enough. though, it sucks having to share you guys with a bunch of people who like you because you're hot, i'm happy for you guys.

Alex, honestly you guys aren't "selling out". To me selling out is, like you said, compromising their "whatever" for money, but also forgetting who supported them from the beginning, once you lose sight of who your fans are your pretty much a sell out. Since you guys are SUPER awesome in meeting people & hanging out, (I met you at Warped tour in Sac. & In SF for Tourzilla) I don't think you guys will ever become sell outs!!! I LOVE your music
incusarah: 12/10/2007 9:16 PM
you definitely haven't sold out. when every band starts up as teenagers in their garages, isn't it their goal to make it big and evenutally be on MTV or get that sort of big exposure?

all it means is that all the hard work you've put into your music has paid off. so your video was on MTV, that's awesome. you've worked hard and deserve it boys.
jellyxbellyx102: 12/10/2007 9:25 PM
Seriously? people think that All Time Low is "selling out". i don't think so, i mean i've listened to all the records you guys have made and so far it all sounds the same to me. All Time Low hasn't changed the way they play their music or the way they are to fit a certain image that they need to get money. I agree with you Alex, at least that's what i thought "selling out" meant. Don't get me wrong but do those same people think that BLG sold out because they were on TRL? no most likely not. Or how about Cartel, they didn't sell out by doing Band in a Bubble did they? no.
By having All Time Low make it to TRL or MTV in general is great, because that just shows that they are getting somewhere. and people shouldn't call that "selling out" they should be saying "OMG you were on TRL, that's so cool!" not "they were on TRL, what sell outs!"
But personally that's just my opinion, so Alex, you and your AMAZING band are not "Sell Outs."
wantsomebread: 12/10/2007 9:26 PM
Basically, I agree with your definition of selling out. To a lot of people 'selling out' overlaps with overexposure and alienation. I think some fans feel alienated when bands aren't as accessible as they used to be because of increasing popularity. And incorporate new fans competing for your attention... appreciation. When you're less accessible, you become an asshole because you can't give each fan the individual attention they want. If your personality changes slightly because people aren't going to want you to change and stop being the guy that they 'know', then that also makes you a sell out.

Fans wants bands to have money, but not through corporate endorsements or 11 year olds buying dolls out of your likeness with their parents' money.

I don't know how MTV continues to be relevant since it's complete shit.

You're not a sellout. If you do, I'll let you know.

eh.. time to get back to studying...

I completly agree with your definiton of selling out except for one thing . I think selling out is not when a Band/musican/artist changes their music but when they Lose their reason for doing what they do and only do it for the sole intent purpose of making money. I say that because sometimes a band changes their music because they are getting more mature or they just want to try something new and fans sometimes jump them by saying they are selling out or the label made them do it just cause their music changed. But in all reallity it was their choice. So as long as the band/musican/artist makes music for every other good reason other than making money (not that it cant be a reason, cause they have bills to pay too) they are not selling out. Of which you guys definatly are not selling out cause that would just be rediculous and who really cares if your on TRL it just means there are people out in this world that like you of which is a big props to you for doing so well

You took the words right out of my mouth. I read the description before I watched the video, and that was the first thing that came into my mind. To sell out means to me is that a band changes their image, and sound to fit into the mainstream music scene, ie MTV; to get more money like you said. Just because you were on TRL once doesn't mean your a sellout. Paramore has been on TRL several times, and I don't think they have sold out. A lot of bands that we all like have been on TRL, like MCR, FOB, Hellogoodbye, Coheed and Cambria, A7X, Gym Class Heroes. I could go on. None of those bands have gone on to change their sound to fit the MTV image for the money.

honestly how could anyone ever say you guys are selling out when you are doing what you love the way you want and still showing love for your fans?

and i think people are confusing fame with selling out i really do.
